Arnold Gihozo

Math and Science

Arnold is a 4th-year computer science major at the University of Alberta. Outside of university studies and his current job as a software developer for the Sickle Cell Foundation of Alberta, he enjoys playing music and volunteering for his community. He decided to become a volunteer for Help Young Minds as he believes that "within the time we are going into, it is important to help each other to develop new skills and improve our sense of community."

Nick Kazungu Mugabo

French and Math

Nick is currently studying to obtain his doctor's degree in pharmacy at the University of Alberta and will be entering his 2nd year in the Fall term. During his free time, Nick enjoys watching TV shows on Netflix, cooking, and spending time with his friends. He decided to become a tutor for Help Young Minds as it "stood out to me because it allows me to give students the confidence to succeeds in school. I have had a tutor in the past, and it made a genuine difference in terms of my academic performance. Therefore, I would like to have the chance to help someone else improve their understanding of the concepts seen in class."

Audrey Bondoc

English, Math and Science

Audrey is currently in 3rd-year majoring in International Business with a minor in Business Economics and Law at the University of Alberta. Some of Audrey's hobbies include needlework (embroidery, crocheting), costume design, and garment fabrication. Audrey loves sewing, quilting, and most other things that involve fabric. Volunteering for Help Young Minds is important to Audrey as "I understand the feeling of sitting in class and having no clue what my teacher is talking about, and I hope to help students who feel that way about math and physics!"

Nishi Patel

English and science

  Nishi is a third-year University of Alberta student currently doing a bachelor of science with a specialization in immunology and infection. Her hobbies include dancing; Nishi has done hip hop, jazz, and Bollywood. Nishi also likes to watch a lot of Netflix and occasionally do some painting. Nishi chose to volunteer with Help Young Minds because "I love working with kids. Since high school, I have always enjoyed helping people with academic concepts, as I believe helping helps not only the other person but also solidifies my learning. I think it's a fulfilling thing to do."

Emily Meyer

English, math and science

Emily is a fourth-year student at the University of Alberta, majoring in Finance and minoring in Business Economics and Law. She spends her free time cooking, thrifting, playing the guitar and drinking excessive amounts of caffeine. She decided to volunteer at HYM because "I want to be able to share my love for learning. I think sometimes people get bogged down with assignments and 'to-do' lists and forget to be inquisitive and creative. I want to be today's student's reminder!

Cindy Srinivasan

Math and science

Cindy is currently in the second year of a BSc Specialization in Pharmacology. Cindy loves to cook, play the piano, and go on bike rides with friends during her spare time. Cindy wants to be a part of Help Young Minds because "I understand how difficult learning can be during these stressful times and even more so when there can be barriers in accessing help. I want to ensure students have an equal opportunity to succeed in their education, while also having a supportive peer to talk to!"

Eric is currently completing a Bachelor's degree in Education majoring in mathematics with a minor in general sciences at the University of Alberta. In Eric's free time, he enjoys playing basketball, learning, and teaching. Eric decided to volunteer with Help Young Minds since "it's in-line with my discipline. It's a perfect opportunity for me to sharpen my skills while helping students who lack or have limited resources to help them further their education in any way, shape, or form. "

Milan Regmi

Social studies and math

Milan is currently a second-year student at the University of Alberta, in the combined Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Education Program, with a major in music and a minor in mathematics.

Milan's hobbies are doing anything that has to do with music, including playing the piano and French Horn in multiple bands and composing music. Milan decided to volunteer with this organization because "I see this opportunity as a win in multiple ways. As an Education student, it allows me to experience working with children of multiple ages and abilities. I can also give back to children within the community and be role models for those who cannot access resources."

Annelie is starting first year as a Master's student in Speech-Language Pathology. Annelie's hobbies include reading, listening to podcasts, and visiting cultural festivals. Annelie decided to volunteer with this organization as "I love to help, teach, and spread knowledge to others. Plus, I am a people person, and this organization helps bring people together."

Sarah is currently a 3rd-year student pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education at the University of Alberta. Sarah's hobbies include cooking and listening to music. Sarah decided to volunteer with this organization because "it is an excellent opportunity to support students' learning in a safe and welcoming environment."

Briana Forner-Walker

Briana is currently completing a Biochemistry Honours degree and is in second year. During Briana's spare time, Briana enjoys hiking, rowing, gardening, and fitness. Briana decided to volunteer because "a lot of tutoring services are inaccessible, and with the new changes in learning, having extra support is becoming more important than ever."

John Kim

Math and science

John is currently doing a Bachelor of Education with a chemistry major and an ESL minor. John's hobbies include drawing, singing, and dancing. John decided to volunteer as a tutor with Help Young Minds as " I think this is a great opportunity for me to get experience with students and meet new people. Also I want to help give a deeper understanding of what is happening in their classes. It makes me happy to help others where they are having a hard time succeeding. Lastly, I really enjoy interacting with kids."

Abdul-Samad Olagunju

Social Studies, math and science

 Abdul-Samad's current degree is in Neuroscience in the second year. Abdul-Samad enjoys playing basketball, watching the NBA, biking, and watching horror films. Abdul-Samad decided to volunteer with Help Young Minds because "I enjoy helping others succeed with subjects they previously struggled with, and I believe that I can help teach others challenging concepts with an easy-going, receptive manner."

Emily is a second-year student in elementary education. Emily's hobbies are playing the flute, weightlifting, and anything outdoors! Emily decided to volunteer with this organization "because it is a great opportunity for a future teacher, and I enjoy working with kids!"

Kristina Holman

English and science

Kristina is a third year Bachelor of Secondary Education student with a major in Physical Education and a minor in Biology. Kristina's main hobbies are taking care of all my animals (sort of like a mini-zoo!), baking/cooking, and playing video games! Kristina decided to volunteer with this organization because, "as you can guess from my degree, I love children and teaching! I am so excited to meet new people and help others."

English

Laura is in  fourth year with a B.A with a major in Classics and a minor in Spanish. Laura's hobbies include running, camping, hiking and travelling. Laura decided to volunteer with this organization because "Education is essential, and I want to help students have the most positive experience possible with the school. I love working with people one on one to help them meet their goals!"

Nina Ballanyi

Science

Nina is in 3rd year in BSc Honors Physiology! Nina love to draw, listen to music and ride their bike around the city. Nina wants to volunteer for this organization because "I love tutoring and spreading the love and understanding of science I have. I think everyone deserves the chance to succeed in their education and it would be amazing if I could help them do so."

Sophie Lafond

English and social studies

Sophie is in a Bachelor of Arts as a Women's and Gender Studies major in the first year. Sophie enjoys doing karate, reading and going on walks. Sophie decided to volunteer with Help Young Minds as "I both love volunteering and working with kids. I have a lot of experience working with kids, and they always brighten my day. As a kid myself, I know I would have appreciated someone to help me with my studies further since my parents did not always quite understand what I was learning and how to help me learn it."

Kesia Muthuthotatil

Math and science

Kesia is in second year at the University of Alberta doing my degree in Criminology! Kesia's hobbies include reading books, going on walks, and enjoying Edmonton's scenery, especially the river valley, and recently embroidery.  Kesia decided to volunteer with this organization "because I have always loved working with kids and especially helping them achieve their full potential. As someone who has, had tutors before I know how important it is to have someone who students can depend on when they do not understand what is being taught in class and help them become confident in their abilities."

Vishavjeet Hundal

Science

Vishavjeet is currently in the fourth year of a Bachelor in Science in Psychology with a Biological Sciences minor. In Vishavjeet's free time, they enjoy reading and going for bike rides. Vishavjeet decided to volunteer with Help Young Minds because "when I was in high school, I got help from a tutor and was able to learn many skills that were beneficial for me beyond the class that I was struggling in. I would like to help others succeed in their classes, and I think that learning with someone close to their age can be important because I can relate to how they may feel.

Social studies

Megan is currently completing a Bachelor's degree in Political Science with a minor in Economics. This will be Megan's second year studying at the University of Alberta. In Megan's free time, they are either watching movies, baking or listening to music. Megan has chosen to volunteer with Help Young Minds because "it provides kids with the resources I wish I had in my earlier education. Getting help outside of the classroom is not always accessible, and HYM gives kids the chance to succeed with whatever resources they may need. Helping those to reach their academic goals would be such a rewarding experience as well."

Kashish Aggarwal

Math and science

Kashish is a second-year student in the faculty of science at the University of Alberta, aiming to graduate with a computer science degree. Kashish loves writing letters. Of late, Kashish has been learning to play chess. Kashish decided to volunteer with the organization as they want to "imbibe [child] curiosity and, at the same time, teach them."

Jasmine is currently completing a Physiology Honours degree in the third year. Jasmine enjoys reading, painting and spending time outdoors. Jasmine decided to volunteer with Help Young Minds because "I enjoy working with kids. Also, there are many barriers to accessing help and extra resources outside of class, and I'm sure the new learning changes are only making things more difficult, so I wanted to help out and provide students with the help they might need during this stressful time."

Math and science

Melika is currently doing my BSc in Physiology Honors and is in the third year. Melika's hobbies are riding a bicycle, reading books and listening to music. Melika's decided to volunteer with Help Young Minds as "I have had the great experience of working with students. I am interested in tutoring students and helping them in their courses to become more successful."

Emersan Kristel-Grinde

Math and science

Emersan is in the second year of a science undergraduate degree in biology, with a minor in chemistry. Emersan's major interest is fitness/health. Emersan decided to volunteer with Help Young Minds as "two of the personal goals I had set for myself at the beginning of this semester included becoming more involved in the university community by joining an organization/club and partaking in an activity where I could utilize personally developed skills to provide knowledge or assistance to someone else."

Amna wanted to volunteer with this organization because "I love to learn new things and teach others.
