Nishi Patel



English and Science





Nishi is a fourth-year University of Alberta student currently doing a Bachelor of Science with a specialization in immunology and infection. Her hobbies include dancing; Nishi has done hip hop, jazz, and Bollywood. Nishi also likes to watch a lot of Netflix and occasionally do some painting. Nishi chose to volunteer with Help Young Minds because "I love working with kids. Since high school, I have always enjoyed helping people with academic concepts, as I believe helping helps not only the other person but also solidifies my learning. I think it's a fulfilling thing to do."



Emily Meyer



Math and Science





Emily is a fifth-year student at the University of Alberta, majoring in Finance and minoring in Business Economics and Law. She spends her free time cooking, thrifting, playing the guitar and drinking excessive amounts of caffeine. She decided to volunteer at HYM because "I want to be able to share my love for learning. I think sometimes people get bogged down with assignments and 'to-do' lists and forget to be inquisitive and creative. I want to be today's student's reminder!"



Angie Chen



Science





Angie is a recent graduate who has just completed an undergraduate degree in Honours Physiology. She will be starting a PhD in Oncology in the coming year. During her spare time she enjoys playing video games, but she also loves to write stories and bake as well. Angie decided she wanted to join HYM because "I really love teaching! I understand the frustration of not understanding a concept and I want to help students get through those stressful situations when there may not be others they can turn to for help."



Inga Olu-Jordan



Math and Science





Inga is currently a third-year student doing a Bachelor of Science with a Specialization in Pharmacology . In Inga's free time, she likes to go for runs, being active outdoors and spending time with friends. Inga decided to volunteer with Help Young Minds since "I work a lot with the younger population and with this organization I can continue to help youth succeed academically, by sharing my passion for certain subjects. I’d love to help someone see beyond just a tedious homework assignment and develop a passion for learning!"



Ethan Vetsch



Math and Science





Ethan is currently a third-year student in the Bachelor of Science/Education Combined Program at the University of Alberta with a Major in Math and a Minor in Physical Sciences. Ethan loves to play volleyball and hockey in his free time. He also likes to do activities in the mountains such as camping, hiking, and skiing. Ethan decided to volunteer with Help Young Minds because he has a passion for helping and working with youth to facilitate their learning. This experience will also help him become a better and more understanding teacher who will help many more youth in his future teachings.



Harsimran Sidhu



French, English, Social Studies, Science and Math





Harsimran is currently a third-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science with a Specialization in Immunology and Infection. In her spare time, Harsimran loves watching hockey, going outside, and spending time with family. Harsimran decided to volunteer with HYM because "I loved the opportunity to give back and provide help to deserving students who may not be fortunate enough to have a mentor to guide them with their learning."



Kesia Muthuthotatil



Math





Emily is currently a third-year student at the University of Alberta, majoring in Criminology. She loves to read books, go on walks and enjoy the scenery of Edmonton especially the river valley, and recently embroidery. She decided to volunteer at HYM because "I have always loved working with kids and especially helping them achieve their full potential. As someone who has had tutors before I understand how important it is to have someone who students can depend on when they are not understanding what is being taught in class and help them become confident in their abilities."



Sophie Lafond



English, Social Studies, and Math





Sophie is currently a second-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Arts with a Women’s and Gender Studies major. In their spare time, Sophie likes to read, do karate, and work on their car! Sophie decided to volunteer with HYM because "As a kid it was always hard for me to get help from my family for my schoolwork and I want to help other kids not have to worry about that kind of thing."



Shalea Saunders



English





Shalea is currently a fourth-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Education with a Major in English and a Minor in Physical Education. In her spare time, Shalea loves volunteering, working out, camping, and long boarding. Shalea decided to volunteer with HYM because "I want to gain additional teaching experience before becoming a teacher myself. I also want to help students understand and fall in love with the joy of reading and writing."



Delaney Fisher



English, Math, Science, and Spanish





Delaney is currently a fifth-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science with a Major in Psychology and a Minor Spanish Language and Literature. In her spare time, Delaney likes to read, do sports, and exercise! Delaney chose to volunteer with HYM because "I have been tutoring English since 2018 and I really enjoy helping my student reach their goals. I am an avid reader and love sharing my passion for literature and languages through tutoring!"



Jhalak Batta



English, Math, Science, and Social Studies





Jhalak is currently a first-year student majoring in Psychology. In Jhalak's free time, she likes to dance, sing, do art, read, write poetry, general writing, cook and hike. Jhalak decided to volunteer with Help Young Minds since "I am passionate about academics and love working with students in order to help them develop academic skills and progress in their educational careers."



Kelsey Manning



Math and Science





Kelsey is currently a fourth-year student doing a Bachelor of Science with a Major in Psychology and Minor in Biology. In Kelsey's free time, she likes to read, do gardening, and go on bike rides. She also love to spend time with her friends and family, and her dog, Friday. Kelsey decided to volunteer with Help Young Minds since "I have been a tutor before, and I loved being able to spend time with others and help them understand things they are struggling with. School can be very daunting, and it helps when someone else is there to explain things in another way that may make more sense! I love that Help Young Minds is an accessible service that can help students feel more confident about school!"



Shea Keats



French, English, Social Studies, Science and Math





Shea is a first-year student, majoring in Biological Sciences and minoring in English. She spends her free time reading, running, and baking — especially cookies! She decided to volunteer at HYM because "I have always been passionate about learning, and Help Young Minds is such a great chance to help students learn more—and enjoy learning! I think mentorship can be very important to young people, especially when they're struggling, and I'd love to be the person who helps them overcome some of the obstacles they face."



Anant Bhide



Math and Science





Anant is pursuing a Bachelor of Science with a Specialization in Computing Science. In Anant's free time, he loves to swim, play basketball and badminton. He also likes to connect with new people, explore new places and different cultures. Inga decided to volunteer with Help Young Minds since "In my opinion, education is not given to judge students according to their marks, but the purpose of it is to increase our knowledge. Many students are scared of higher studies (like math) because of the heavy competition. We should actually appreciate and enjoy the knowledge we get. Moreover, all my life I have had great mentors who always support me and direct me to the right path. This all inspired me to volunteer with help young minds."



Jeslin (Jess) Tijo



Science





Jess is currently a student majoring in Integrative Biology and minoring Physical Education. In Jess' free time, she likes to travel, hike, cook, and play flute and piano. Jess wanted to volunteer with Help Young Minds because "I wanted to be a part of an organization that brought tutoring resources especially during the pandemic to students who would otherwise not have access to tutoring."



Valencia Das



English, Social Studies, and Science





Valencia is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Criminology. In her spare time, Valencia loves gaming, singing, watching anime, writing songs, making digital art, and photo editing. Valencia decided to volunteer with Help Young Minds since "I was looking for an opportunity where I could get the chance to tutor kids once again. Because I did this before and I absolutely loved the experience and therefore, wanted to do it again and fortunately found an opportunity with HYM."



Jenna Tiedje



English, Social Studies, French, and Math





Jenna is a second-year student doing a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in East Asian Business Studies. She enjoys doing CrossFit, reading, and playing sports like basketball and soccer. Jenna decided to volunteer at HYM because "HYM is a great chance to help young kids gain confidence in themselves and for me to give back to the community."



Junlin Feng



Math, Science, and Chinese





Junlin is currently a fourth-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Education with a Major in General Science and a Minor in Chinese. In his spare time, Junlin loves swimming, and reading manga. Junlin decided to volunteer with HYM because "I wanted more volunteer experience with teaching ."



Pooja Ahluwalia Sethi



Math, Science, and English





Pooja is currently in her second year of her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. During her spare time she enjoys exploring the outdoors with her family, painting, and watching TV. Pooja decided she wanted to join HYM because "I love working with kids. Their enthusiasm about little things fills me with so much joy. I think I learn a lot from working with them."
