Hello young minds!

When the time to ‘decide what you want to do with your life’ comes upon you, it can be a very stressful and worrying time, as it was for me. I am here to tell you that it is one hundred percent OKAY not to know yet! Lots of people don’t know what they want to do when they enter university. It is a daunting task for a high school senior or junior to attempt to know what you will enjoy doing for so many years in the future, possibly the rest of your life. I personally was very unsure about what I wanted to do, and I did both a gap year as well as a year of study without any specific direction. I knew I wanted to do some sort of science so I took many courses in the science field to find out specifically what I would like. Thank goodness I did that, or I would not have discovered the program that I am in now; engineering. Actually, I would probably be in my third year of a teaching degree because in high school I figured that would be alright, seeing as I couldn’t think of anything else that I was particularly passionate about. I am extremely excited about what I am doing now and thankful that the mentors in my life assured me that it is okay not to know what I want yet.

Moral of the story; you may think that you don’t have a passion, or that you must start a program with a specific direction immediately. This is very untrue! You should take the time to get to know yourself and to explore as many options as possible. As long as you stay motivated and keep moving forward in life, your passion will reveal itself. There is absolutely nothing wrong with taking a year off or completing a year or more in a general program so that you can find out what you enjoy doing.
